A ten-week Gansey knitting course with Rita Taylor, course tutor, who has over 30 years commercial gansey knitting experience. Based at Sheringham Museum during the autumn/winter of 2023 and spring 2024.

This fortnightly course will have 1 month break over the festive period.

Meet the tutor during our Drop-in Gansey knitting days on August 15th and 29th 2023 at Sheringham Museum.

Course Content:

Where: at the rear Schools entrance to the building (Sheringham Museum at the Mo, Lifeboat Plain, Sheringham, Norfolk. NR26 8BG)

When: at 10.30-12.00 (lunch 12-1.30 not provided) 1.30-3.00pm Tea and coffee included.

Week 1: Thursday 2nd November 2023
The history of ganseys, knitting a swatch to get a gauge, working out the numbers of stitches for your desired size, estimating how much yarn is needed and advice on which yarn to use.

Week 2: Thursday 16th November 2023
Casting on different ways including long tail, double knot, and Channel Island cast on. Deciding on your welt style. Knitting in the round.

Week 3: Thursday 30th November 2023
Choosing your motifs and patterns to include, choosing definition ridges, and fitting the pattern into the required size.

Week 4: Thursday 7th December 2023
Choosing your seam stitches, how much st st to do before starting your pattern, whether to add initials, what type of definition ridge to work, if any.
Break to catch up over the festive period and knit all that plain st st!

Week 5: Thursday 11th January 2024
Gussets; where to start them, choosing the method and frequency of increasing.

Week 6: Thursday 25th January 2024
Dividing for the back and front and working the pattern with the wrong side facing.

Week 7: Thursday 8th February 2024
What style of neck? Shaping if it’s a crew neck, where to start and how wide to make it.

Week 8: Thursday 22nd February 2024
Shoulders and the different methods of joining them, neck gussets and how to make them.

Week 9: Thursday 7th March 2024
Picking up the sleeves, decreasing, and adding a pattern and working that upside down.

Week 10: Thursday 21st March 2024
Types of cuffs and finishing off and blocking.

In exceptional circumstances, refunds may be offered after this point –but not through nonattendance of the course. Any sessions missed through unavoidable circumstances can be ‘caught up with’ and the tutor will assist individuals to do this as homework to keep pace with the rest of the group.
