Traditional Dutch Ganseys for Children

Stella RuheThis beautifully-produced book brings a wealth of information about traditional fishing village cultures around The Netherlands as well as a treasure-trove of gansey patterns collected from those villages and designed for childrenThe third in a series with a common fishing industry and gansey theme, this book focuses on child labour in the fishing industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Life was very hard in many isolated villages, with little chance of education and some boys had to begin in the industry when they were only seven or eight years old. Many more started at the age of eleven or twelve. Their working clothing would include a gansey, sometimes knitted with the pattern matching that of the older crew members.Ms.Ruhe has recorded social history information and patterns for ganseys from villages and towns across the Netherlands to ensure that their local cultures are preserved. Her earlier books have presented gansey patterns for adults and have proven very popular. This book, with a selection of forty children-sized patterns and plenty of supporting instructions, makes an excellent companion for them.
